Who We Are
Howard Rice is a sailor, boat builder, sail maker, former college professor, mountain climber and adventurer with an international working career that makes him ideally suited to instruct boat building, advise sailors and lead small boat on water experiences. Howard has instructed US Army Combat Swimmers, NATO Special Forces groups and Navy SEAL instructors in small boat (MAROP) operations. He has managed and directed 167 world, national and local sailing championships and regattas including Olympic games. In addition he has managed outdoor based promotional programs for companies across the spectrum from Rolex, Timex, Mistral, Klepper ag, Deutsch Bank ag, Proserv and others. He is a featured keynote speaker at outdoor and sailing symposia. His exploits have been covered in books and magazines ranging from Sports Illustrated to Outside. Howard is passionate about small boats, shared knowledge and above all loves to inspire others.
John Welsford is a renowned designer of boats large and small. His body of work ranges from the smallest tender to competitive ocean racers with a vast portfolio of traditional designs in between. John is also an excellent sailor and a boat builder of considerable skill and experience. He and Howard have teamed up to co- instruct builds and offer small craft skills seminars. John has traveled the world working with builders and sailors including twice to Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego with Howard.
